Plovdiv’s history

Before the start line

Plovdiv’s history reaches back eight millennia. You can still see traces of it on a walk through the city after your race.

  1. The first settlements

Neolithic settlements appear on the site of present-day Plovdiv. Archaeologists have found remains of homes, pottery and tools.

  2. Philippopolis

Philip II of Macedon captures the Thracian settlement at Nebet Tepe. The city takes the name Philippopolis.

  3. Trimontium

The Roman city has a theatre, stadium, forum and aqueducts. The Ancient Theatre and part of the stadium are among the sites you can visit today.

  4. Filibe

After the Ottoman conquest, the city becomes known as Filibe. It continues to grow as a centre of trade and administration.

  5. The Bulgarian Revival

Plovdiv becomes a centre of Bulgarian education and publishing. Many of the Old Town’s houses date from this period.

  6. European Capital of Culture

Plovdiv becomes the first Bulgarian city to hold the title of European Capital of Culture.

  7. Plovdiv Run

We meet for Plovdiv Run on 16–18 April. The races start at the Rowing Base, with the rest of Plovdiv waiting after the finish.
